My photography journey began the summer right before high school, when I visited Korea to see my grandparents. Looking through their old belongings, I found a point-and-shoot film camera from the 90s, and I have been taking photos ever since.
I prefer to take photos on 35mm film for a slow and deliberate creation process, but I also use a digital camera for long trips or social events. I take mostly street, landscape, and portraiture.
My interests changed drastically throughout high school. I used to prefer math and computer science, attending math competitions and hackathons (I still do) for fun. After taking AP Biology during my sophomore year of high school, I grew fond of life sciences. A few history courses and experiences, such as interning at KACE (Korean American Civic Empowerment), also developed an interest in politics and policymaking. Entering college, I am excited to discover new, intriguing topics and areas.
Being influenced by my culture and upbringing, I am also interested in East Asian calligraphy. I originally learned to write from my grandfather, who has a lot of pieces around his house.
The piece on the left says 孤莫孤於自恃 ("Nothing is as lonely as praising yourself"). This is something I try to live by.
I started playing hockey in Korea before my parents could find a stick my size, but I eventually quit after moving to a new area.
After hockey, I didn't play many sports other than recess soccer in school. Eventually, I decided to try out for the school team in high school, and it's been an entertaining yet humbling journey so far. With opportunities such as leading as a captain, high school soccer has been an unforgettable experience.
Growing up in Korea also made me a big baseball fan, and I continue to watch KBO (Korean Baseball Organization) games today. I also gathered enough courage to try out for the school baseball team in my Junior year, jumping into a new sport without any prior experience. It has been one of my best decisions in high school so far to try something completely foreign and unfamiliar.
